An inverter is an electronic device used to convert direct current (DC) power to alternating current (AC) power. It is commonly used to convert DC power sources such as solar cell power, battery storage systems, etc. to AC power that can be used in domestic, industrial and commercial applications.
The main function of an inverter is to change the direction and characteristics of the electric current so as to convert DC to AC power. It does this by using a series of electronic switching devices, such as transistors and IGBTs, to rapidly switch the current on and off, thereby simulating an AC waveform. The inverter also regulates the output voltage and frequency by controlling the switching frequency and duty cycle of the switching devices.
Inverters can be categorized into the following types based on their output type and purpose:
